Its been longer than I can remember that I headed to the bioscope on a Saturday night. What a come back it was. Yesterday, Sar and I piled into some Nandos with Jo and Ryan before taking our seats for Blood Diamond - strangely enough two rows in front of Kam, John, Danyel and Mike!
Desipte the hype I hadn’t actually read that much about Blood Diamond before watching it, but the basis of the story is not complicated - conflict diamonds in war torn Sierra Leone. Simple concept - superb acting - brilliant execution. One of the best movies I have seen in a long LONG time, but not one that I think I could put myself through again any time soon - it was hard hitting and eerily real. Leonardo DiCaprio is really good in this - he’s not one of my favourite actors, but he pulls off the South African well and I thought his script was good, although the accent deserted him at times. The star of the show though has to be Djimon Housnou aka Solomon Vendy. His performance was mind blowing, and left more than one viewer with teary eyes.

Popped into Chez Gerard last night for dinner - as you do on a Monday night - and thoroughly enjoyed it. I have heard mixed reviews, although the majority of negative reviews were more based on the price and inferred high expectations. Jo and Ryan managed to get hold of some vouchers through someone who knew someone, which lessened the financial blow, but having said that, the price list isn’t as exorbatant as I thought it might be. The food was exquisite, we all had steak, and well worth the money. Service was slick and quick. Not your every night sort of place, but fantastic if you’re in the mood for a treat.

Quick heads up, please don’t fall into the trap - as we did - and go watch The Last Kiss because you dig Scrubs. Scrubs rocks. In contrast, this movie must be the single most depressing film I have ever seen. Ok, thats a lie, there are serious movies like Hotel Rwanda that were pretty sad and depressing, but in terms of less serious/more lighthearted films - the last kiss is the definition of depression. AND there’s no end! Great theme, and there are some funny moments, I will give it that, but I left the cinema wondering whether the sun would actually rise this morning. Then I realised I was in the UK and that the sun isn’t going to rise again until April anyway!!!!!

Had another belter of a company weekend in the New Forest this weekend past, and more to follow on that including some less-than-flattering photo’s………. in the meantime though, quick note re the cinema. Went to see The Departed last night and thought it was superb. Martin Scorsese has assembled an unbelievable cast for this including Jack Nicholson, Leonardo LeCaprio, Matt damon, Mark Whalberg, Martin Sheen, Alec Baldwin, and the rather nice Vera Farmiga. It follows the story of the Irish and orginased crime in Boston. Prepare yourselves for a typical Scorsese finish!

Amy managed to get tickets for a group of us to see the new Evita musical at the Adelphi theatre. Directed by Michael Grandage, who also directed the brilliant Guys and Dolls, with lyrics by Tim Rice and music by Andrew Lloyd Weber, it promised a lot. It was good. On first reflection I don’t think I personally enjoyed it as much as The Producers or Guys and Dolls, however the general consensus that it was one of the better plays seen. I didn’t know the story of Eva Peron, and I haven’t seen the film which was both a benefit and a hindrance. For those that enjoy musicals, the singing and dancing is out of the top draw. Eva was played by Argentinean Elana Roger who was excellent.

Went to watch Guys and Dolls with my parents on Friday night. I had heard really good reviews and it didn’t dissapoint - what a fantastic show. Definitely one of the better shows I have seen in London. Sar booked tickets on Lastminute.com about 10 days before and got seats in the stalls, right in the middle about 15 rows back. At half price (£27.50) it was a superb night’s entertainment and I would recommend it to anyone. The theatre (Piccadilly Theatre) is just off Piccadilly circus in the heart of London making it accessible.

Oh man, a quiet Sunday night turned into raucous, side splitting laughter with ‘40 year old virgin’. We missed it at the big screen, so got it out on DVD. Such good humour, so for those who have seen it hopefully this will cause a giggle remembering the poor waxer lady, and for those who are even slower out the blocks than I, pick up a copy!

This post is specially for Chris as I am all too aware how much he enjoys David Gray….
Was super excited to find a new batch of CD’s (some been out for a while) in my post box on return from Ireland. I had worn out James Blunt’s ‘Back to Bedlam’ before we left, and although Coldplay’s ‘X&Y’ is still getting a lot of airtime round Clockhouse Place, i needed fresh tunes. I picked up Moby’s ‘Hotel’ before I left as well, but I am not as impressed as I was with ‘18′. Back to the post box….. I have had David Gray on pre-release for some time now, so was intrigued to listen to the new album ‘Slow Motion’. Sad some will say, and I know that I am one of only a few David Gray fans, but he has churned out another collection of decent ballards. The only dissapointing thing about the album is that there are only 10 tracks….
I am however (believe it or not) more impressed with Craig David’s latest offering ‘The Story goes…’. Its been 3 years since ‘Slicker Than Your Average’ and this new album was well overdue. The first single ‘All The Way’ didn’t hit No. 1 in the UK but lets be honest, the UK charts cannot honestly be considered a benchmark when ‘bands’ like McFly have already 2 No’ 1’s in 2005 and Tony Christie spent no less than 7 weeks perched at the summit of British music .
In a rush of blood, I threw in Kelly Clarkson for sh1ts and giggles, but for those considering shelling out hard earned cash on the debut album ‘Breakaway’, the photo’s on the front and back is about as good as it gets. If you’re into collections, or composite albums, the ‘Festival’ CD is worth picking up, Green Day, Snow Patrol, U2, Keane, Coldplay, Linkin Park, Kings of Leon, REM, etc.
CD of the month though, must go to this gem I ‘bought’ on the streets of old town, Edinburgh. I was accosted by a Buddhist Monk looking for donations, and on hearing our accents, straight away idetified that we were from South Africa and proceeded to detail his recent tour of Chatsworth……..yes, the one in Natal….. lets think about this for a minute… In my line of work, I deal daily with statistics, probability, chance, etc. But, what are the chances of 2 South Africans bumping into a buddhist monk on the streets of Edinburgh who has just toured Chatsworth? I arsk u wiv tears in my eye…. So the short of it was the I gave a donation and he gave me a copy of his latest Buddhist Mosh Chants ‘The Gouranga Powered Band - Mosher 6′. This stuff is pure gold. Not available on Amazon.
