I know, you’ve all wandering where I’ve been…….. to be completely honest - eating! Man, Christmas lunch was incredible. Sars, Amy (known fondly by her new found friends as ‘Kiwi’ after the 7th case of beer and upteenth bottle of champayne) and I trekked a short distance across West Hill to Renee’s for a huge lunch and festivities. 12 of us gathered to eat, drink, swap secret santa gifts and play fives (as you do). Thanks to all at 7 Whitlock for the organisation, preparation, and cooking, a feast it was. Read the rest of this entry »

Anyone looking to travel back to SA in the next 6 months or so should check out the Virgin Atlantic sale. I have been looking for our flights back to SA in March/April and thus far haven’t found a direct flight for less than £665. A completely bullsh1t price, but that’s another story altogether. Sars got an email from STA advertising cheap flights and checked it out to find that the flights are with Virgin who are having a MASSIF sale. I have just booked a return ticket for £500. They have stripped just under £200 off their usual price - proving how much profit all the airlines in cohoots on the LDN-JHB route make!!!!!

We have closed shop for the day and I am heading off to meet mates for a couple of festive drinks. Christmas Carols follow tonight to really get into the swing. Sars and I will more than likely be in Clapham tomorrow night enjoying a few beverages, so those of us join us if you can! We will be joining friends for a late Christmas lunch on Sunday, before touring Southfields celebrating with as many people as we know.
So, I raise my glass, and wish you all a merry MERRY Christmas.

I have FINALLY laid my grubby hands on the photographic evidence from the JHB staging of the ushering dinner. There are a couple of beauts, although I have decided, in the interests of reputations, to ignore the blatantly embarressing ones…………… JHB ushering photo’s.

Dug this cool tool up off Dave’s website (although I understand it originally came from a mate of his Brendan Gray). You can enter all the countries you have visited and it plots a world map blocking out the countries toured. Give it a go at World 66 and paint the world red! Thanks mainly to Her Majesty’s Pound I am personally approaching 30 countries worldwide…………
create your own visited country map
My website settings has blocked off half of China and Aus, but you get the idea. I can’t be asked to change the settings only to get the dirty Aussies on the map!!!!!!

Christmas time not only brings festive cheer (we are going to watch/sing Christmas Carols at Royal Albert Hall on Friday night), presents, and plenty partying, but also a plethora of sport. Every which way you turn there seems to be top class action on at the moment.
I write often about Liverpool, with the next game on the schedule - a classic against Newcastle at Anfield on Boxing Day and Michael Owen’s return home. The autumn rugby tests may be over but there is plenty northern hemisphere stuff on the go, each match featuring no less than about 6 or 7 Saffas and Kiwis. Plus, the whole NZ rugby world cup saga has taken a new turn with confirmation that Ireland will play lucrative tests against the All Blacks in exchange for the vote at the world cup bid.
South Africa survived day 5 against the Aussies in the first test at the WACA today. SA bowled Aus out relatively cheaply in the first innings, but did not capitalise and marginally surpassed the Aussie’s first effort. In typical Aussie fashion that fought back hard and posted a massif score allowing themselves 4 sessions to bowl us out. Thanks to a magnificant rear gaurd effort by Jacques Rudolph, SA not only survived but were only 5 wickets down at the end. The 2 upcoming Boxing Day and New Years Day tests are gonna be crackers. I know someone who said the other day that Rudolph was good enough to play at the top level. Any thoughts now Laz?
Young snooker sensation Ding Jun-hui beat veteran legend Steve Davis in the final of the UK championships on Sunday. Ding is 30 years younger than Davis, who was going for his 7th championship title, won 10 frames to 6.

Oh man, a quiet Sunday night turned into raucous, side splitting laughter with ‘40 year old virgin’. We missed it at the big screen, so got it out on DVD. Such good humour, so for those who have seen it hopefully this will cause a giggle remembering the poor waxer lady, and for those who are even slower out the blocks than I, pick up a copy!

What a day I had yesterday. Thank you to everyone who remembered and sent through texts and emails. I was not going to reply to all, so thank you. Sars as usual spoilt me rotten, bought me too many expensive gifts and treated me to the best day.
I had my office Christmas party on Friday night - thanks to whoever organised the birthday dessert, and NO I am not gay….. (a long story, take my word for it). Woke up a little hazy yesterday, but the eyes were thrown wide open when present after present started arriving. Sars and I then chilled most the day, went to Richmond Park and had the coldest picnic in history… Richmond Park is stunning during winter. I was then taken on an adventure to London last evening. We started with drinks at the Oxo Tower. We have been threatening to go for some time, either for drinks or dinner, and it lived up to expectations. The cocktails were spectacular, and its well worth a visit. We then climbed on the underground to a stunningly lit Regent street. I was treated to dinner at Gaucho Grill an Argentian style restaurant serving the best steak in the capital (so they claim). I must be honest, although I haven’t tried that many steakhouses in London, Gaucho Grill will be hard to beat. A 400g rump steak with a pepper sauce and fat hand cut fries were easily demolished. And they serve Dom Pedros…..
Thanks Buzz for a superb birthday!

Whatever your choice of sport, sometimes you have games where you get to the end and think ‘How the hell did we not win that?’ Unfortunately today was not Liverpool’s day, and despite completely dominating the entire game with 62% possession, having 20 odd shots on goal, 17 corners, hitting the cross bar and putting the ball in the net 3 times, Liverpool failed to trouble the scorers. Sao Paulo, in spite of being brim full of skill, were happy to sit back and defend, hitting Liverpool on the break. They even played 3 centre backs. A superb piece of skill broke the deadlock early on in the first half, Liverpol conceeding their first goal in over 17 hours of competitive football - an incredible achievement. After that, Liverpool chased the game. To be fair Liverpool should have been 1-0 up inside 2 minutes when Morientes somehow missed the target with a free header from 10 yards. With Sao Paulo diving all over the field, the authorities had a tough day at the office, and probably dissallowed the first 2 Liverpool ‘goals’ correctly. However, the linesman made a complete hash of the 3rd ‘goal’ judging Luis Garcia off-side before Flo poked the ball home.
Liverpool have themsleves to blame for not scoring a hatful of goals and putting the game beyond the opposition, but defeat is more difficult to swallow when one is denied by human error which could be eliminated by the use of technology.

Rog and I had a rather intriguing discussion not long after I moved to the UK and he had emigrated to NZ. Had we gone from the infamous ‘Dodge and Beast’ in Goble Road, Durban, South Africa and near simultaneously moved to the opposite ends of the world? Some simple mathematics pursued, and we determined the opposite end of the world from Aukland is actually somewhere just off the northern cost of Spain or Portugal - pretty close to the opposite of Londre when one is talking on a global scale.
Well, now there is a much easier way for everyone to get in on the fun (yes this is fun for us engineers). Check out Dig to the other side and follow the instructions.
According to ‘Dig to the other side’ Rog and I were not very accurate as the opposite end of the world from Auckland is…….. somewhere in southern Spain! Sort it out Rog, please…………
