The day has finally arrived, when Sar and I climb the beloved stairs onto a big jumbo jet and fly half way around the world to family, freinds sun and fun. I say, finally, but to be honest the past few weeks have absolutely ‘flown’ by so its actually snuck up on us quite quickly. There is so much stuff I want to blog about from the last two weeks including:
Kew Grill last Monday,
John’s suprise bday party,
Significant developments at work,
Cycle Lanes,
Wine diaries,
Plans for SA,
etc, etc
But alas time is in short supply as spring has arrived and the days get longer. So, I will resort to writing on the plane and depending on how clever I feel (check out Grayskull’s post) maybe even load up in the sky! For all you in SA, wasssssoutt, I have been looking forward to this for a while YEEEEEEEEEHHHHHHHHHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wrote a couple weeks back about Jamie (me mete Dan’s brother) opening a pub in Ham, southwest London. The grand opening was held on Saturday 18th March and we was amongst to enjoy the first few pulls of the draft taps and the free hog roast on offer. I even reignited my affair with the double pint glass we found whilst reonvating one Saturday……. Sar summed it up pretty well by enquiring rhetorically ‘guess I’m driving then?’.
I have to say, and I never really doubted them, but Jamie, Mel, Dan and their crew have done magnificently in renovating the place. It is now well worth a visit, especially for grub (lunch and dinner) as Jamie (I am yet to sample the food yet) has prepared his own personal menu for the pub and is now serving. So next time you are in Richmond or surrounding areas, drop into The Ham Brewery Tap (4-6 Ham Street Ham Common TW10 7HT) for some grub and pints. I have also included a sample of the menu on offer, just to whet your appetites Read the rest of this entry »

The long awaited results of the 2006 South African blog awards were released on 17th March. Congratulations to Dave ‘The Fishmonger’ for gaining a highly credible 2nd in the overseas South African blogger category. No word on where I finished in the same race but no doubt a long way below the ever popular Wozafriday. Thanks to all those that threw their vote in for Chateautoby and hopefully next year wil bring more success.
Speaking of success, the award for best overseas South African blogger went to Reluctant Nomad. The site is well worth a read, especially to check out all the cool plug-ins operating on the site. This is where I got the inspiration to load up the funky country identifier on the right hand toolbar. I appear to be picking up hits from all corners of the globe, as well some from NOT on the globe and in space!! Hello ET, welcome. In fact, welcome all!

And……… happy birthday to my mom!! This time however, I have the day smack on, so the adjustment wasn’t so difficult!
Sars and I are flying out to South Africa in no more than 7 sleeps for a 10 day holiday, so we will be celebrating properly then. But until then, mom, Bruce and Murray said that they were going to spoil you rotten today so along with Dad’s usual generosity hopefully you have a great day. Enjoy!

I seem to have this habit of forgetting important dates, not completely but just a delayed reaction. One would have thought that it would be a realtively easy adjustment to make in order to remember on the day instead of the day after - apparently not. So, this time, congratulations and apologies to Mr. John Young for turning the BIG two-nine yesterday 20th March 2005. We had an absolutely smashing dinner last night with Kam and John at Kew Grill (in Kew funnily enough) too celebrate. Kam and John frequent Anthony Warrol-Thompson’s restaurant (one of three in London) and Sars and I thoroughly enjoyed the place. Mainly because they serve delicious hunks of fillet with pepper sauce, and panacota. And Pinot Noir - which was average. The Austrailian Shiraz/Cab was better, something rather strange for me too say, but I was warned!

Mixed fortunes for the saffa’s back end of yesterday and this morning. Swimmers seem to be kicking butt as they always do, but unfortunately the rugby sevens guys got beat by Australia at the quarter final stage 20-14. Dissapointing really, I was hoping the sevens guys would do better.
Speaking of doing better, I watched the Fijians play, and oh my word these guys are incredible. The legend of world sevens, Waisale Serevi is still calling the shots for Fiji, but they have a new master in training, Will Ryder. He scored a try against the Welsh from inside his own goal line that is one of the best I have seen. Sars and I were lucky enough to watch Servei and Ryder in the flesh helping Fiji lift the world cup in Hong Kong last year. Dave, sort it out, I thought we was going to organise a trip over!!!

Following South Africa’s unbelievable victory against the Aussies on Sun, I was about to post this absolutely hilarious comic of a kangaroo having a protea surgically removed from its nether regions by a vet, but I’m gald I haven’t after checking todays cricket score!!! Well done to SA and Graeme Smith for winning the toss in the first test at Newlands, electing to bat and getting 8 down in less that 60 overs!!!! No better way to get the Aussie spirits straight back up!

Me mete Dan has recently purcahsed himself a pub just off the Ham common in south west London, along with his bruvver Jamie. The two, along with countless support staff (I can almost claim to be a part of that group but the day I did go round to help out I ended up drinking more than scraping plaster off the wall) have been working day and night to gut the old, glum, dingy, crappy pub and ressurrect it as local that both locals and visitors will want to visit. Some of you may actually have come across this easy drinking, affordable Spanish Rioja. It is available at high street stores such as Tesco, Sainsburys and OddBins.
Crianza is standard of wine only surpassed in the Spanish classification system by Reserva and Gran Reserva, and a wine with a classification of Crianza should, in theory, set it above your typical Denominacion de Origen Spannish wines such as Rioja. Rioja refers to the region, one that is becoming very popular. Rioja is everywhere, and I think generally offers good value for money.
It is very approachable, well rounded. Not big, bold fruit climbing out the glass, rather more elegant, creamy, silky taste. Bit a smokiness which I find quite common for Rioja’s.
I have picked up a few bottles of this, some 2002 and others 2003, following a tip off in the March issue of Decanter magazine. A bottle should set you back £6 or £7, which I think is well worth the money, but at the moment head down to your local ‘ass-smacking’ asda store and you get this baby for £4.48. A serious saving and seriously good value wine. Plus, if you buy 6 bottles or more at ASDA you get a further 10% off.
£4 a bottle for a 2002 Crianza Rioja - makes good reading and drinking to me.
4 stars and a rating of 17 from Decanter magazine. See the Campo Viejo website for more info on the wine.
