Following the success of the ‘Testrugby’ fantasy rugby competition for last years tri-nations, a league was set up for this years Super 14. Slightly more complex and time-consuming this time round as 12 players were required for all rounds incluidng the playoffs and multiple trades available at all stages to get everyone on their toes. I missed out on rounds 1 and 2 due to sheer lack of time in selecting my team. However, the Liverpool ‘comeback’ magic rubbed off as Chateautoby powered through the field during the latter group games and held on at the final post to take victory by 1000 points!
The top 3 finishing places in the Chateuatoby league were as follows:
Chateautoby - 37,880 points for a global finshing place of 2,265
Perennial Sharks - 36,795 = 2,553
Land Lubbers - 30,380 = 4,429
Daniel Carter was my trump card thorughout as he consistently amassed serious points, and will be a dead cert pick for my Tri Nations fantasy team. Speaking of which, watch this space for details of the 2006 Chateautoby Tri Natiosn fantasy league on Test rugby!

Went to watch Guys and Dolls with my parents on Friday night. I had heard really good reviews and it didn’t dissapoint - what a fantastic show. Definitely one of the better shows I have seen in London. Sar booked tickets on Lastminute.com about 10 days before and got seats in the stalls, right in the middle about 15 rows back. At half price (£27.50) it was a superb night’s entertainment and I would recommend it to anyone. The theatre (Piccadilly Theatre) is just off Piccadilly circus in the heart of London making it accessible.

14th May 2006 hosted the annual Goring-on-Thames duathlon, The Hairy Legs. It was another great event, the 3rd I have competed in, the weather came to the party but unfortunately ‘Team Machine’ did not…… As I posted before I am still suffering from a knee injury and decided early to bin the whole event and focus on the ride with Dan offering to compete in both running legs. We were hoping to challenge a top five team place which would have meant finishing in around 1hr45mins, although this was uncertain as the bike course was completely revamped from previous years. In fact I went out the weekend before to check out the course and they just about completely revamped it again during the week before the race!!
In the end we finished in 1hr50mins, 5 minutes slower than we had wanted to, owing mainly to me bottling the ride (and thanks to a stupid rider in front who wiped me off the course and into the nettles at the 6km mark). I still think 1:45 was achievable, a minute off both runs and 3 off the ride was about right if we’d competed at our prime. Never-the-less a 22nd place finish out of 73 teams was good enough, and the day was still an enjoyable one. A 1hr45min finish would have brought home 12th so a lot more work have been required to challenge the top 5. In fact the team that won the competition did so based on an unbelievable ride. Sandwiched between two decent but not earth shattering 22 min 5 km runs, the team rider completed the 20km course (it was actually closer to 22km) in 48 mins, that’s an average speed of nearly 30km an hour, on a difficult off road course with technical sections - seriously good riding.
Dave and Laz finished a very credible 28th in the team event (1hr52mins47secs), largely on the back of little training, Dave being particularly impressive on the bike finishing 5 places ahead of me on the bike leg. Troy was the only courageous soul to take on the full pain of all 3 legs and finished in just over 2 hours, a placing of 73rd.
All the photo’s have been uploaded here so you can see the pain!
For those that are keen we are looking at competing in a similar duathlon which has started on the ridgeway near the Hairy Legs course in September. Same distance, same routine, different course. Check out The Bone Shaker.

I would like to take this opportunity to apologise to my legions of fans out there who have missed the daily wit found on the chateautoby website. It has been a rather busy time of late! However, all is well, we is back from a great trip to Sicily and my folks are safely back in South Africa after a true adventure with Air France. Ryanair surprised us all my providing an average service to Sicily and the airplane gods obviously noticed and turned on my folks for the flight back to SA.
So stories to come include tales of hairy legs, the knights of the round table, the mafia and the M25. Where to start………

Excitign times, and although I have to go into work tomorrow and the end of next week it fels like I am already on holiday. My folks fly into Heathrow airport in a couple of hours fro mCopenhagen for a 2 week jaunt around their bithplace. Well, ‘jaunt’ is porbably not fair, cos we are going to Sicily for 5 of those days, but never-the-less. In the past 2 years we have been lucky enough to join my folks in New York and Hong Kong respectively as my dad has attended annual international conferences. This year, the shipping industry has dragged my dad and mom to Denmark and Copenhagen. Timing hasnt afforded Sar and I the oppurtunity of visitign Copenhagen (Sar has been before) but I’m still relally looking forward to the next 10 days and having my folks on ‘my’ territory.
We have a couple of days in Londre to get wet and to enjoy dinner with my cousin Cara, and then we’re off to SUNNY Sicily on Friday morning. We’re flying Ryanair so no doubt there will be problems. 5 days to soak up the rays, the history, the food and the wine on the Italian island. And then back to Londre until Saturday to catch up with my other cousin (yes I only have two!) Allister, for my mom to shop for death and for my dad and to sample some amber and maroon liquid. Gonna be a blast!

You will note that I have toned down this post somewhat from its original title of ‘Cape Town W@nkers’. Please do not take this as any indication that I am any less bleak with the Stormers. There are many excuses for the Stormers getting beat on Saturday including; the Bulls being a better side, the Stormers having nothing to play for and the Bulls having everything to play for, the ref, the weather, the fact that Bobby Skinstad retired, etc. There is also something to be said for the fact that the Sharks let in 2 late, soft tries against the force and it is their fault they didn’t make the semi’s bla bla. However, regardless of circumstances, and all of the above, the fact remains that the Stormers should NEVER lose to anyone, let alone any South African side AT NEWLANDS 43-10. Furthermore, they should never be beaten 43-10 by a South African side at Newlands who had 2 players sinbinned! Have the Stormers no pride? A team packed full of Boks, Joubert, Barry, Schalk, Big Joe, De Kock, De Villiers and Eddie Andrews, likely to be picked by Jake White. Do all those players feel that they didn’t at least need to play for their Bok places? I hope that Jake White does play in form players at the national level, although several have not even been included in the extended 45 man squad. Because there are a lot of 2005 boks looking very average at the moment.
Incidentally, the Stormers finished 4th out of 5 South African teams in this years Super 14, below the newly incorporated Cheetahs and above only the hapless Cats.
I agree with Dave, good luck to the Bulls on Sat, hopefully they can learn from the Sharks performance earlier in the season and give the Crusaders a run.
Following directly on from the previous post of sheer joy, I write after the Stormers absolute capitulation this afternoon, handing the Bulls a Super 14 semi-final place deservedly destined for the sharks. A 43-10 loss by the Stormers AT NEWLANDS gave the EXACT required winning margin by the Bulls to pip the Sharks. The coke snorting ….ers from Cape Town. I’m livid. More later when I’ve calmed down.

Well, Liverpool kept all supporters’ hearts in mouths this afternoon, edging West Ham in an absolutely thrilling FA Cup final at the Millennium Stadium Cardiff. Liverpool were firm favourites going into the game, but cup games, let alone cup finals always turn up something special. West Ham were in the 1st division last season and have now finished 10th in the Premiership and should really have won this afternoon. Although, lets be honest they didn’t score a well conceived, intentional goal all afternoon. Their goals came courtesy of a Carragher own goal (yes, he is allowd a mistake once in a while), a Riena fumble and a mishit cross. Having said that they were up for it and if it weren’t for that man Stevie G, West Ham would be heading back alone the M4 with the 125th FA Cup. In the end it was Steven Gerrard who was the difference between the two sides, and with him in such good form he has to be the driving force behind England’s assault on the World Cup. I don’t think that England can win the World Cup, in fact I think that Barcelona, Argentina, Spain (if they can pull it together), Italy and France have better chances. However, there should be no shortage of action with the likes of Gerrard, Cole and Lampard feeding on the scraps from Crouch and launching shots at the target from the edge of the area. I agree with Dave’s lineup (assuming Owen fit). Ultimately Pepe Reina, recently awarded the ‘Golden Gloves’ of the season for his contribution in a 33 clean sheet season, was villain turned hero as he saved 3 out of 4 penalties in the shoot out.
GET IN YOU REDS!!!! And to all the Chelsea fans out there, your reign at the summit is over, the Premiership is up for the taking next year, even with Ballack and Shevchenko!

Sar got sent this by a mate. Click on this link and check out this home made movie clip (NOT THAT KIND OF HOME MADE MOVIE FOR THOSE OF YOU WITH YOUR MIND IN THE GUTTER) of two blokes who thought it’d be clever to dress up as Lama’s and mingle with other animals in an enclosure. There is a heap of other stuff on the Break.com website as well. Hilarious. Idiots.

As promised, as part of the ‘Wine diaries’ series I have finally managed to find the time to complete a detailed review of the French Wine Classification System.
France is synonymous with wine. Ask anyone what the first thing they think of when you say ‘wine’ and you could generally expect ‘France’, ‘Bordeaux’, ‘Champagne’ and ‘Burgundy’. France has a complex system of categorising wine Read the rest of this entry »
